After a long day of work or play, there is no greater feeling than to lie down and drift off to sleep. Sleep is vital for a healthy mind and body, as is the side effect of sleep, dreams. Dreams are simply the ideas, pictures and feelings you experience during sleep. Although some people may think they do not dream, it’s more likely they don’t remember their dreams. Not only does everyone dream, but there are many types of dreams that we have.
This is the most common type of dream. In these dreams, we do all sorts of extraordinary things. We could be flying through the sky like an angel or having a deep, intellectual discussion with Einstein. The focus of the dream is different for everyone, but the purpose is the same. These dreams help us process events that occur during the day or even events that occurred years ago. The stimuli that gets stored in your subconscious mind during the day will revisit you during your dreams at night.
Everyone has experienced downtime or not being interested in a class lecture or doing work. During these times of idleness the mind tends to create a world more to its liking. Instead of sitting at a boring desk job, the daydreamer may imagine himself as a famous athlete leading his team to victory. While sitting on a park bench having lunch, a woman might imagine the man of her dreams asking for her hand in marriage. It’s estimated that we daydream up to 120 minutes per day, and positive daydreams can affect our reality. Athletes, musicians and businessmen have used daydreams to envision their success, which later came to pass.
These dreams occur when we have a physical need during sleep. If you have a need to go to the bathroom while you are sleeping, you may dream of constantly searching for a bathroom and not being able to find one. If you are sleeping and find yourself on a desert searching for water, you might be thirsty and need to get up and drink a glass of water. These dreams are usually less fantastical and more reality-based to get you to take care of your need.
Certain dreams may come back again and again. It could be the same dream that you had in the past or an expanded form of that dream, but the underlying message will be the same. These dreams are strong messages from the waking mind to pay attention to something. During waking hours the dreamer may have a problem that he is ignoring or feels he cannot resolve. These dreams present solutions and keep presenting solutions until the dreamer acts on it.
Little credence is given to dreams that predict the future, even though lots of people have claimed to have psychic dreams throughout history. Psychic dreams are dreams that tell what’s going to happen in the future. When they occur, they are usually very real, like something that would happen during waking hours. Usually psychic dreams have a very important message for the dreamer. They can warn of some impending disaster or something that will be extremely upsetting to the dreamer. Although many might not believe in psychic dreams, many have had dreams of natural disasters which came true.
Nightmares are the dark side of the world of dreams. These dreams are so powerful that they will force you to wake up. They usually evoke extremely strong feelings of fear and the dreamer finds himself in situations that he desperately wants to escape. The dreamer may wake up and think it’s only a dream, but these dreams should not be ignored. In our dreams or nightmares, only images can be used to transmit messages. You will not get an email saying that you are in an unhealthy relationship that you need to end, or that your job is making you physically ill. This type of dream will transform your boss into a witch that wants to turn you into a frog or your loving partner into a demon trying to drag you to the lowest reaches of hell. The best thing to do with a nightmare is to examine it, analyze it and see how you can use that information to make your waking hours more peaceful.
As you can see, dreams are very important. They help us find solutions to problems. They help us understand our emotions and sometimes give us a peek into the future. When you go to sleep at night know that your dreams, in whatever form they choose to come, are all working to make your days and nights more sweet.
