New Year’s Resolutions and the Psychic Mock Up
“Whatever the mind can conceive and believe, it can achieve.” ― Napoleon Hill, Think and Grow Rich
The History of New Year’s Resolutions
The Babylonians were the first civilization, over 4000 years ago, to make resolutions at the coming of a new year. They were also the first to celebrate the New Year. The New Year was tuned with the growth cycles when they planted the crops in mid-March. They called this 12 – day festival Akitu, crowning a new king or revering the old. They would make a promise to pay off debts and return any borrowed items. In a way, these were the earliest form of resolutions.
The Romans of 46 B.C. also celebrated the New Year, making January 1st, named after the god Janus. Janus was a god with two faces, one looking to the past and the future. They would make sacrifices and offerings to the god and promise good deeds for the new year.
For the early Christians of the 1700s, the new year was a time to erase and release past mistakes and look to the future. Some of these traditions remain today, with particular churches offering New Year’s Eve services in place of attending parties.
Although New Year’s resolutions are rooted in religious rites and beliefs, the practice is more secular today. There is a focus on self-improvement and making personal promises. In fact, 45% of Americans make New Year’s resolutions, but around 8% meet their goals.
New Year’s Resolutions and Manifesting
Every New Year’s resolution can have a practical application, like drinking more water, saving for a home, or organizing personal finances. However, many people look at creating a life that one truly desires conceived through the art of manifestation. Manifestation, simply put, is when thoughts become things. It comes from the Latin, Manifestare, meaning to make public when we take a goal, vision, or desire and take steps to make it come into reality.
The New Thought Movement
Many tools, tips, and techniques may help you manifest. One of the most popular and well-known methods is The Law of Attraction (LOA), where what you pay attention to will attract it into your life. Many have spoken of this concept and are considered part of the New Thought Movement.
Napolean Hill, author of Think and Grow Rich, Esther Hicks, who channels Abraham, who speaks of the Vortex, and Rhonda Byrne, who created The Secret phenomenon, are examples of people who brought this philosophy to the mainstream.
The Law of Attraction is a new age philosophy that your thoughts create things. If you think positive, you will manifest positive things, while if you think negative thoughts, you will have adverse outcomes. According to this law, thoughts have energy that acts like a magnet attracting things into a person’s life, including relationships, money, and health.
Napoleon Hill (1883 – 1970) was an American self-help author known for Think and Grow Rich. His books have majorly influenced writers and speakers in the self-help and spiritual movements. He became an advisor to Dale Carnegie, who compiled rare stories from millionaires on how they acquired and grew their wealth and power.
Esther Hicks and her late husband Jerry Hicks has spoken of manifestation in being in the Vortex. Both have channeled Abraham, who showed them how The Vortex is a place where all your dreams and desires are present. Together they published many books, including Ask, and it is Given, and Getting into the Vortex. Getting into the Vortex only requires raising their frequency to be high on the emotional scale.
Rhonda Byrne is a new age self-help writer who published The Secret in 2006. It has been published in 50 languages and sold over 30 million copies worldwide, based on the premise of the Law of Attraction. The information is not new, but the presentation had a wider reach than her predecessors. Her books and film provided a compilation of spiritual experts who explained this philosophy differently. Although widely criticized for borrowing from other teachers and creating new age babble, her ability to reach the masses was beyond expectation.
Manifesting may be seen as goal setting on an energetic level. However, it still requires some level of action on the part of the individual. It is a delicate balance between taking actionable steps while simultaneously being in a state of allowing.

A Psychic Perspective
In psychic development and energy work, manifestations form using meditation and clairvoyant tools. A psychic mock-up may be parallel to manifestation. A mock-up is an energetic vision of what a person wants to create in their life. It makes a clear mental picture of a desire, whether a new relationship, job, more money, a trip, healing, health, and beyond. Your imagination only limits the possibilities.
Once a mock-up forms, working on personal abundance, called havingness in psychic terms, and releasing it into the universe are the next steps. It ideally works when the person is allowing amusement and play and requires no effort. Of course, if your mock-up is to run a marathon or become a doctor, there are actionable steps required, but maintaining a state of non-effort and play with high havingness is the sweet spot for beautiful things to come into a person’s life.
