Psychics with Jobs; The Ghost Hunter
Ghost whisperers, ghost communicators, and ghost hunters. These titles conjure images of seances, exploring old abandoned buildings and ancient sites under the cloak of darkness, scanning with sensors, and the classic canister vacuum removal technique seen in the movie Ghost Busters. Many people question as to whether ghosts are real and hauntings of people and places are possible. Those that have experienced hauntings and anomalous events first hand would vouch for their existence. But exactly what are ghosts, how does one communicate with them, and ‘remove’ these energies when they appear to surround a person or occupy a space or place? Ghost hunting has evolved from a quirky hobby to a source of entertainment and curiosity for the masses.
What is a Ghost?
A ghost is an apparition that is associated with someone who is deceased. Ghosts can roam freely and be associated with geographical and physical structures. Many ancient cultures believed that ghosts were due to the fact that the spirit does not separate from the body and was able to continue to exist in some form after death. In some parts of the world, ghosts, especially deceased family members, are considered as real as the living and are even honored and given a place at the table for meals and ceremonies.
When physical space is haunted it is believed to be the result of strong residual emotions that were once associated with a person or place. If an individual is haunted it may be due to the connection that a person had with the deceased spirit. Hauntings may include apparitions, moving objects, strange lights or orbs, changes in temperature, disembodied sounds such as voices, laughter or screaming, and music playing.
There is much folklore that surrounds this belief of ghosts. It is still widely popular to tell classic ghost stories around a campfire or during the Halloween season for spooks and entertainment. Many cultures around the world associate certain funeral rites with the prevention of the soul returning to ‘haunt’ the living.
Modern Ghost Hunters
Ghost hunting has come out from the fringes to a mainstream form of entertainment with shows such as “Ghost Hunters”, Ghost Adventures, ‘Ghost Hunters International’, and ‘Ghost Nation’. Most of these are centered around detecting paranormal activity and ghosts present in places using specialized equipment. Whey an anomaly is found, they will tap into the entity and communicate.
Ghost hunting equipment is known to help detect ghosts and there are many dedicated shops that sell various types of lights, sensors, night goggles, Geiger Meters, Thermal meters, thermal cameras, and Electro-Magnetic Frequency (EMF) detectors to hunt for ghosts. One of the most curious tools for ghost hunting is the Ghost Box, which is a radio device that scans frequencies to detect Electronic Voice Phenomena (EVPs) and communicate with spirit. Some people claim to have heard human-like voices communicating through the ghost box.
The Original Ghost Whisperers
The early 19th-century spiritualist movement started out as a religion where one of their aims was to communicate with the deceased. Spiritualism emerged at a time when the society of the day was challenging old views of the world. The theory of evolution was a hot topic and the concepts of ” animal magnetism” a term coined by German doctor Franz Anton Mesmer, spoke of invisible energy or ‘magnetic fluid’ flows through humans and animals alike. The medical community disproved his theories, however, the spiritualist movement adopted this premise for spiritual healing. In 1848, James Braid developed the method of hypnosis or mesmerism branching out of animal magnetism.
The spiritualist movement was big in upstate New York in the mid- 1900s which coupled with women’s suffrage and the anti-slavery movement. The region was a hotbed of the sharing of ideas and information. Seances in private homes would be filled with those wanting to communicate with spirit using techniques table tilting, table rapping, and physical mediumship techniques.
