Synchronicity and Psychic Phenomena
“Synchronicity is an ever-present reality for those who have eyes to see.” – Carl Jung
“Coincidence is God’s way of remaining anonymous.” – Albert Einstein
A synchronicity is when there is an event or events that seem to unfold like a coincidence. Coincidence is a broader term, which includes both concepts of synchronicity and serendipity. Often humans look to synchronistic events to confirm a choice or action. It is shown in popular culture in countless books and movies. In the movie The Matrix (Wachowskis, 1999), this notion is explored where there are a series of events that do not seem to be connected lead to proof that the universe is in a state of unified oneness. The Matrix explores the holographic reality that humans possibly live in, exposed through a series of coincidences that expose the truth.
There is an almost romanticized notion of synchronistic events, that can at times be forced and a form of magical thinking, placing the power outside of the hands of the individual to make decisions. However, there are also many examples where this occurrence has played a role in pivotal events.
The term synchronicity derives from Syn, meaning with, and Chronos, meaning time. It was defined by Carl Jung (1875-1961) to explain a simultaneous series of events occurring with no apparent cause resulting in a deeply symbolic and meaningful experience for the observer. Jung further defined this as events “falling together in time”. The term serendipity is an unplanned but fortunate discovery. It appears in art, music, design, and even scientific discoveries. It relies on the wisdom of the individual intersecting with a series of events resulting in a positive outcome.
Many people believe that a coincidence is a randomized series of connections that one string together to create meaning. Einstein described coincidences as being “God’s way of remaining unknown”. There are many examples of how this plays into our life.
Have you ever experienced a situation where you receive a sign just before you make a decision or something happens? Often these signs appear when we most need them in our lives. This can be viewed as the universe or God-source speaking, or a way for your higher self to reflect back to you what you are moving towards in spirit.
Synchronicity can act as a sort of guide when we are stuck and unable to decide which direction to move in. It can feel like an energy that is in a way ‘speaking’ through people, objects, and events to give us guidance.
History of Synchronicity
- Horace Walpole (1717 – 1797)
- A member of the British House of Commons who noticed that he had a knack for finding what he needed with perfect timing. He wrote to his cousin about it and coined this ability Serendipity. He borrowed the term from the fairy tale “The Travels and Adventures of Three Princes of Sarendip.” Walpole saw serendipity as a combination of luck, chance, active observation, and informed observation (he called sagacity). Through these methods, it leads to finding something by accident.
- Paul Kammerer (1880 -1926)
- An Austrian biologist who observed people for hours as they passed by in a park. He started to notice patterns in the occurrences. He called this Seriality where a repeat of the same or similar things or events across time and space, but are not connected by the same acting cause. He viewed this repetitive nature as a natural phenomenon and forming a sort of natural law.
- Carl Jung (1875 – 1961)
- Grew up in a Swiss family where paranormal phenomena were normalized. His experiences also included telepathic, clairvoyant, and precognitive dreams, prophetic visions, psychokinetic events, and out-of-body and near-death experiences. He created the term Synchronicity which was the explanation for many of these experiences.
- Bernard Beitman ( 1942 – ? )
- The founder of Coincidence Studies and coined the term Simulpathity which defines a specific subclass of meaningful coincidences: the simultaneous experience at a distance by one person of another person’s distress. This would indicate that individuals are closely bonded and experience similar experiences, even at great physical distances.
Angel Numbers
Angel numbers are sequences of repeating numbers that may come into your awareness at opportune moments. Each repeating number may have a special significance that you assign, or be based on some generally accepted definition.
Angel numbers are based on the belief that the universe speaks to us through signs, symbols, people, or events. Guardian angels and ascended masters may communicate messages through these numbers. It can be seen as a confirmation, a warning, or a sign to the observer and provide reassurance during challenging times.
Signs of Synchronicity
- Repeating numbers or favorite numbers show up
- An object like a stone, feather, or coin appears
- A person appears out of nowhere, sometimes a stranger, to deliver a message in answer to a question. It feels as if it has come through the person
- The timing of an even appears seamlessly in your life just when you need it
- You receive unexpected help seemingly out of nowhere, often with people you have never met before
- Anything you derive meaning from, which is unique and personal to each individual
- A message or sign appears in your dreams that lead you to make a choice or move toward a particular outcome
- Tuning into your intuition allowing greater awareness of synchronistic events in your life
Synchronicity as Validation of Intuition
Intuition is usually validated by an external magic event. Therefore, if you seek an answer and randomly read a sentence in a newspaper, see a sign on the street, pick up an object that has personal symbolism, or watch a video related to your current situation, you will feel a revelation. Then you should ask yourself if that is the answer you were waiting for.
A Psychic Perspective
Synchronicities can be endless and are highly subjective. Perpetually searching for objects or people is not taking into account the power of the mind and the internal feeling of going within. Sometimes people can become overly focused on synchronistic signs and symbols, taking the magic out of the experience.
Heightened anxiety or worry about always needing to receive a sign before proceeding also disrupts the energy of manifestation and the natural energetic ebb and flow of life experiences.
While it can be fun to receive signs that affirm that you are on the right path or making a timely choice, it is relying on an external source to validate your knowing. Rather than scanning externally for clues, using your intuition, psychic tools and meditation are all you need to find your answers.
For example, one tool you may use to find your answers is looking at a situation or choice with a truth/lie rose to see if you are making a decision that is aligned with your highest good. Or you may want to receive a ‘spiritual ‘hello’ with a clairvoyant reading.
Another tool used to bring people and experiences into our life is the mockup tool, which is like a form of manifestation. When we are constantly grasping to find signs and symbols, it can disrupt the energy of a mockup from coming into our life.
Ultimately you are the captain of your own ship, and remaining centered and certain in your knowing, while self-sourcing your validation is the ultimate place to be. Synchronicity may be the lens with which you view the world at any given moment and an external mirror reflection of what is happening internally.
