Precognition and Psychic Awareness
“The best way to predict the future is to create it.” – Peter Drucker
The word Precognition comes from the Latin prae – meaning before, and >cognitio, meaning acquiring knowledge. Also known as prescience, future vision, or future sight, it is when a person claims to have the ability to see into the future. According to Psychology Today, it is believed that one-third of the American population has experienced Precognition.
There is no scientific backing of Precognition; however, many stories and accounts of precognitive phenomena have been recorded throughout history and into the present day. Precognition is a form of Extra Sensory Perception (ESP) that is a sense of knowing and seeing beyond the five senses. It can show up in many ways, including having a sense of knowing someone is going to contact you before they do, a sense of danger that causes a change of plans, a parent or caregiver knowing that a child is in need, and sensing that a loved one is about to pass.
History of Precognition
There are many historical references to precognition dating, possibly before recorded time. In ancient times, Precognition was associated with trance and dream states. It was widely accepted and recorded. Aristotle was said to have studied prophecy in On Divination and Sleep and believed that these dreams were “tokens and causes of future events.”
In the 17th century, Fr. P Boilat published information that outlined examples of Precognition, including an experience in 1883 where he posed a question without speaking to an African Witch Doctor, who responded without having heard it audibly.
In the 20th century, J.W. Dunne, a British soldier and aeronautics engineer, experienced several precognitive dreams. He devised a method to record his dreams and tracked whether they came to pass. He published his findings in a book entitled An Experiment with Time, in which he stated at least 10% of his dreams were precognitive.
Psychology of Precognition
In psychology, Precognition is considered supernatural knowledge of future events, where the seer is not causing the events but instead predicting their occurrence. Generally speaking, precognitive states are viewed as originating from the subconscious, where experiences shape patterns in thought that emerge as information on an event yet to happen.
Carl Jung (1875 -1961), called the father of modern psychotherapy, reported several precognitive dreams and experiences. Most notable what when a dream warned him that his mother would die, and when in 1914, he saw a darkened Europe, believed to foreshadow World War I. He was a major contributor to the development and understanding of dreams and how they may provide clues that lead to greater inner awareness.
Parapsychology is a branch of psychology that deals with the paranormal. It is not well reputed in more standard psychology circles; however, it has a very long and storied history. There are many schools where you may study ESP, such as The Society for Psychical Research in London, England (est. 1892) and The University of Edinburgh, University of California, Atlantic University, University of Gothenburg, University of Greenwich, and many more.
Precognitive States
Precognition may be viewed in three categories: Implicit Learning, Energetic Communication, and Non-Local Intuition.
- Implicit Learning
- This is when your subconscious mind draws upon previous experiences to create a sequence or pattern of what is about to happen before it even occurs. Everyday examples include knowing what notes or lyrics come next in a song based on previous knowledge or what is about to happen in a movie based on a story arch.
- Energetic Communication
- This is an animal or human’s ability to sense what is about to happen just before its occurrence. An example is when animals sense the energies from the earth that an earthquake or tsunami is about to happen and react by fleeing just before the event. Another example is when you have an intuition that someone is thinking about you or staring at you.
- Non- Local Intuition
- Examples are when siblings know that something will happen even when the other lives across the country. Parents can sense if something has happened to their child out of their care. Or when someone knows that a loved one has passed away before being told. It is a state of quantum entanglement, where time and space are not a factor, and therefore it is possible to be connected to someone across vast distances.
- Premonitions
- Often linked with precognitive states, where one has a strong feeling that something is about to happen before it comes to pass. It is usually a warning of something negative about to happen.
Precognitive Dreams
Precognitive dreams are dreams that give you information about the future that you do not have in your waking state. It may include events, symbols, and messages from guides and loved ones, that may not initially have meaning.
- Helena Blavatsky (1831 – 1891)
- A Russian spiritualist and philosopher and the co-founder of Theosophy, a blend of Eastern spiritual beliefs and occultism. She published many books, including Isis Unveiled, the foundation became very popular in the 1800s and still exists today. Although somewhat criticized, Blavatsky claims to have seen the theory of relativity, predicting the photon, explaining the phenomenon and its photoelectric effect.
- Edgar Cayce (1877 – 1945)
- An American clairvoyant that was able to channel, give information on a person’s health and predict future events. Much of his work was conducted in a trance state where he would fall asleep and start to speak while an assistant transcribed the information. His dreams included Precognition of future events, and retrocognition, of periods in history.
- Aberfan Landslide
- In 1966, in South Wales, 150 children and adults were killed when waste from a coal mine buried a school. Psychiatrist John Barker visited the town in the aftermath. He spoke to many residents who had a premonition that a disaster would happen just before the event.
Later on, he discovered that several of the children who died had been experiencing vivid precognitive dreams where they had a premonition that they were going to die. Barker posted an ad asking anyone who had similar experiences to come forward and share, and he received 60 replies.
- President Abraham Lincoln
- Two weeks before his assassination, Lincoln recounted a dream to his wife and friends. He was walking through the Whitehouse when he came into the East Room, where he saw his corpse lying in state. This room would be the exact location where he was laid after he died.
- The Titanic
- In 1912, the Titanic was about to set sail to cross the Atlantic Ocean on its maiden voyage. After the devastating events, many people came forward saying that they had seen the ship crash in their dreams. In some cases, they canceled their tickets or did not board the ship.
A Psychic Perspective
Precognition and premonitions are a form of ESP that may be present as one connects and develops their psychic awareness. Although there is no scientific study to back these claims, there have been many attempts to study and track Precognition throughout history into the present day.
This perception may indicate that an individual is connecting to some collective knowledge, universal field of energy, or superconscious states.
Precognition can be very unsettling and cause sleep disturbances. As a practicing clairvoyant and psychic, clearing picture energies using mediation and psychic tools allows an individual to create space to see clearly in a state of neutrality. It keeps a sense of perspective that seeing something before it occurs does not guarantee that it will happen. Often the act of seeing will change the trajectory of the outcome itself. At the very least, Precognition is an opportunity to release, heal and take growth steps in a state of curiosity, amusement, and neutrality.
