Psychic and Mediumship Development
Psychic awareness has a storied history. For thousands of years, many cultures have recorded evidence of psychics, mystics, wise ones, and seers. Historically, and in some communities today, it was and is common to have an individual who may perform birth and death rites, heal and predict outcomes. Often this role was unique and carried a status that was respected and supported within the group.
Spiritualism and the Modern Spiritualist Movement
Today, psychics are viewed from a more secular perspective, especially in the western world. And while there may be earlier examples, particularly in indigenous cultures, the modern perception generally originates from the spiritualism movement of the 19th century.
In the 19th century, the Fox sisters were the first to formally introduce psychic awareness, mainly mediumship, through gatherings for séances, spirit communication, table tipping, and speaking with the dead. However, there is some dispute about the validity of these demonstrations, as some fraudulent demonstrations were eventually uncovered.
Intuition vs. Psychic Awareness
Everyone has experienced a time when they received intuitive information without a logical explanation. Call it a hunch or gut feeling; these cues are used by many successful people in business, entertainment, and sport. When a mother or caregiver senses something is risky or unsafe for a child, intuition is activated and used as a barometer to take action or make decisions.
Intuition and psychic awareness are distinct, although they have a common thread. Intuition is a sense that can be felt viscerally and is linked to the senses and inner workings of the nervous system. It can be a message, a feeling in the body that leads a person to make a decision or gain insight into something in the moment. Psychic awareness is like taking that intuition and amplifying it, honing in on it through development and practice.
The word psychic is defined as <“faculties or phenomena that are inexplicable by natural laws, especially involving telepathy and clairvoyance.” Psychic awareness can come through any sense but typically is when a person reads energy from a clairvoyant or claircognizant space.
What is a Clairvoyant?
A clairvoyant uses seeing mental image pictures from the 6th chakra as the primary source of gathering information. In other words, their psychic awareness is derived from the sense of seeing.
A chakra is the Sanskrit word for “spinning wheel” and refers to the energy centers or vortices in the human body. Seven chakras are most commonly referred to, but there are many more, both major and minor.
What are the Clairs?
The clairs are the various pathways to psychic information. It is connected to the senses of sight (Clairvoyance), Cognition (Claircognizance), Hearing (Clairaudience), Feeling (Clairsentience), and even taste (Clairgustance), and smell (Clairolfication)
Why Develop Clairvoyance?
When embarking on a development journey, there is no one way to access insight and awareness. Clairvoyance is often used as a starting point for development, which means that there is a focus on accessing information from the 6th chakra. It is ideal for those with a strong visual sense. With that said, it may not be an individual’s most powerful sense, and over time, one may notice that they access their awareness from other clairs related to the chakras and senses.
What is a Medium?
A medium is someone who accesses information from a higher vibrational tone via the upper chakras and can use this to connect to those in spirit or for healing. Many self-proclaimed online and public media mediums claim to speak to the dead. This is the most common perception of mediumship; however, there is also a healing component to mediumship.
What is a Psychic Medium?
A psychic medium uses information on a psychic level to read the energy or communicate with the spirit. Often this information and insight use clairvoyance and higher octaves of energy associated with mediumship. Many of the mediums in popular culture today are psychic, reading from a clairvoyant space, as genuine mediumship takes many years of consistent, focused practice with mentors and development groups.
What is an Evidential Medium?
An evidential medium is a person who provides hard facts, including dates, times, mannerisms, and specific details known only to the person receiving a reading (sitter) as a validation that they are communicating to spirit. The practice originates from the spiritualist movement of the 19th century and has an established church.
What is a Trance Medium?
A trance medium is a person who works from a high vibration of energy (known as white) for healing. A trance medium may work from this vibration or use guides or helping beings to channel and heal through them.
Paths to Psychic Development
Psychic development is available to everyone. Some individuals are born with innate abilities fostered by the environment. There are many pathways to psychic development. It is not necessary to join a group or work with a mentor to develop psychic awareness, but it has its benefits. Knowing which path to follow is entirely up to you. It is helpful to read, attend open houses, and get a reading or healing to see if what is on offer is the right fit for you.
Get clear on your intentions- what are you seeking? What is your goal? How much time and money are you willing to invest in your development? Are you ready to do the work? Do you feel you can commit to the job, even when it gets a little uncomfortable, and see it through? Reading up or watching various psychics and mediums in action may help you further define what you want.
Individual Self-Study
Self-development may mean you have no one to bounce ideas off and keep you in check if you are veering off course. It is hard to self-reflect if there is no opportunity to have a mirror, which your fellow students and teachers can provide.
Jumping in Cold
Jumping into reading without any time to intentionally develop means you will read without tools and practices that allow you to create boundaries and release energy, which can lead to field disruptions and illness.
Many psychics never went the route of learning through various organizations and programs. Many successful and self-actualized people in the field of energy work did not have a formal study, method, or practice and followed their guidance. However, it is possible to get stuck in patterns and not have a clear point of view. You can fall into patterns, program your clients, express biases by interpreting the information you share, and not provide the highest quality reading.
Mentorship
It can provide a lot of feedback and attention for you to explore, ask questions, and find answers; however, finding a mentor that is not looking to play the role of the guru is essential. A pro is that you get a lot of one on one attention. However, a con is that a codependent dynamic can develop.
Group Development Circles
Development circles create a sense of community and connection to others going through the same experiences. It is an excellent opportunity to hear many unique voices and receive feedback from multiple sources to develop further and integrate your learning.
Some things to consider are how the group operates. Look at how inclusive the space is. Is there a sense of autonomy, or is one person running the show? Is there a spirit of fun and exploration where it is ok to ask questions, learn through trial and error, and receive support and communication during your growth?
A Psychic Perspective
Development can be more easily described by what it is not. Development is a lifelong process, not a path mastered in a weekend workshop, book, or program. It cannot be bought and is not always a quick path. It will not solve your problems, heal you or find your answers. It is up to you to do the work, face your truth and use your development to facilitate growth, healing, and change that you initiate, cultivate, and maintain.
Development paths show you that you are responsible for your own life; however, it has unfolded. Accept that you are your master and that developing awareness is a tool that, when channeled with intent, can help you clear blocks, heal wounds, and take growth steps, creating the life you desire.
You may have a unique way of gathering information that includes multiple sensory experiences. It is possible to be psychic but not be a medium, as well as gravitate more towards mediumship over psychic reading. There is a saying that all mediums are psychics, but not all psychics are mediums. There can indeed be abilities that are more pronounced or natural to a person. Focused development work goes a long way in enhancing skills and is not exclusive to a select or chosen group.
Everyone can develop clairvoyance; how you express it and what you choose to do with it are entirely up to you. It is not only reserved for high-order oracles, back-alley-neon-sign-fortune-tellers, or mediums. It is an ability accessible to anyone and can provide multiple layers of growth, awareness, healing, success, and joy to a person’s life. It can be used for relationships in business, cultivating optimum health, wealth, experiences, and a rich understanding of the ebb and flow of human existence.
