The Pineal Gland, Third Eye and the Development of Psychic Awareness
“The common eye sees only the outside of things, and judges by that, but the ‘all-seeing eye’ pierces through, and reads the heart and the soul, finding their capacities which the outside didn’t indicate or promise, and which the other kind couldn’t detect.” – Mark Twain
The pineal gland is an endocrine gland that is the size of a raisin and is reddish-gray in color and is found in all vertebrates. It is the only part of the brain that is limited by the blood-brain barrier. The pineal gland is sometimes represented with the symbol of a small pinecone and is the source of the hormone melatonin, a derivative of tryptophan. It plays a role in regulating circadian rhythms, which are the 20-hour cycle of light and dark periods associate with biological life.
The pineal gland is also considered to have mystical properties, is a “window to the gods”, and considered the “seat of the soul” This is sometimes referred to as the third eye and is considered to be the link between the physical body and the spiritual world.
History of the Pineal Gland
The pineal gland has been referenced throughout history. Some of the most notable examples included René Descartes (1596-1650), who believed the pineal gland to be the point of contact between the soul, body, and place where our thoughts are formed. This was a philosophical way to describe the process of melatonin synthesis. During the middle ages, the pineal gland was considered one of the “three worms”, which included the pineal gland, choroid plexus, and cerebellum. By the late 19th century, the pineal gland was to be a remnant of a dorsal “third eye”.
Spiritual Significance
Many spiritual traditions around the world view the pineal gland as the gateway to higher states of consciousness. It is also related to the sixth chakra. By activating the pineal gland, one activates psychic awareness. This may be achieved in many ways, such as mediation and yoga.
Ancient Hindu thinkers believed that the connection between the pineal gland and the third eye was evidence of its physical presence in the body and was a gateway to higher states and realms of existence. It was considered the seat of the soul.
The pine cone that symbolizes the pineal gland is recognized by cultures around the world including the ancient Babylonians, Egyptians, Greeks, Romans, Christians, and Indonesians, among others.
It is also depicted in many esoteric traditions such as Freemasonry, Theosophy, and Gnosticism. It may be seen in many monuments including Angkor Wat in Cambodia, the Roman Pigna, found at the Vatican, and the Egyptian pine cone staff of Osiris. The Sumerian god Marduk holds a pinecone in hand and Dionysus associated with the Bacchus of the Romans, carried what was called a Thursus adorned with a pine cone.

- The pine cone is used to symbolize the third eye because of its nature to gradually open to release its mature seeds as it ripens. This is like the expansion of awareness that comes with the opening of the third eye.
Activating the Pineal Gland
Some people use a chemical enhancement that contains DMT to activate this region and reaching altered states of consciousness. DMT, also called Dimitri, N, or N-dimethyltryptamine is a hallucinogenic tryptamine drug. The drug produces effects similar to those of psychedelics, like LSD and magic mushrooms. It is nicknamed ‘The God molecule”. Other ways that people activate their third eye are through yogic techniques, crystals, essential oils, and various types of eye gazing.
Effects of Fluoride on the Pineal Gland
Fluoride, found in tap water and toothpaste, impacts the pineal gland once it is introduced to the human body. Consuming excessive amounts of fluoride is believed to lead to the calcification of the pineal gland. A calcified pineal gland impedes the production of melatonin and the biological rhythms of the body. Some even believe that fluoride is injected into drinking water on purpose, in order to block the psychic awareness of the general population.
A Psychic Perspective
The knowledge and practice of activating and accessing the third eye are no longer reserved for mystics, yogis, and new age spirituals. Anyone may access these abilities which are innate in all of us. The benefits of the third eye are increased insight and awareness. It is also believed to enhance your happiness and overall health. It may help your concentration. It improves non-verbal communication. It subdues the ego. And it may increase your psychic capacity.
Also called the “third eye”, the pineal gland (or epiphysis) is an endocrine gland located at the center of the brain, is considered the seat of the Spirit, and produces a particular molecule called DMT. Although there are many methods to activate the third eye, a sound, and consistent meditation practice is all that is really needed. This may include the use of psychic tools for meditation as taught through the Psychic school.
