The Stages of Psychic Development
Coming into psychic awareness is a deeply personal and unique experience. It may be considered as stages like doorways that an individual may pass through on the path to increased awareness and psychic development. Psychic awareness develops in many ways. It may come on the heels of traumatic or sudden life events. Or others may start to ask questions and explore after a period of illness or death of a loved one. Whatever the cause that sparks the movement toward psychic development, there are some shared experiences.
Psychic development is sometimes related to Joseph Campbell’s Hero’s Journey or Erik Erikson’s Psychosocial Stages of Development, among other models. A person may pass through all or some of these stages, and ultimately, you can derive meaning through your personal experience. You may make your own observations in the exploration of this work. As with any study, not all paths are the same, nor are they linear and uniform. Individual growth happens in its own time and can show up in many ways.
Not everyone has the same method or end goals in mind when developing psychic awareness. It may be to heal past wounds and live in greater joy and love for some. For others, it may be to self-heal and share with friends and loved ones. Others may hear a calling to delve deeper into the spiritual aspect of awareness. Not everyone who seeks wants to take up reading and healing as a profession. Some may pass through these stages and enter into an exploration of mediumship.
All of us are born with a certain level of awareness. It may not be nurtured and go buried or latent for years for some. For others, it is possible to have the family circumstance and support systems to explore their gifts freely. Being psychic is not a gift, rather an innate human ability that lies dormant in many. Developing your psychic skills may bring deep awareness, healing, understanding, and connection. How you choose to express or use it is entirely up to you.
Stages of Psychic Development
The path of psychic and spiritual development is diverse and similar to what is discussed in developmental theories. Although each person’s approach is different, there are distinct stages that one may pass through. These stages may last weeks, months, or years and are experienced more than once. Rather than a straight line, one may view psychic and spiritual development as more of a spiral or ebb and flow. Rather than having a definitive endpoint, it is more of a continuous state of cultivation. As with any information, only take what is true to you, and resonates.
- Stage 1 – Excitement and Enthusiasm
- his stage may be after the initial opening or commitment to exploring your intuition. You may be as eager to learn as much information as you can find. You start to make connections and realizations that fuel you to go further. With each new experience, you are motivated to go deeper.
- Stage 2 – Questioning and Discernment
- You start to look at what you are learning with what you already know during this stage. There may be some comparison and questioning if your abilities and the energies you are experiencing are real. You may fall into an analysis of what you are sensing and feeling. Relationships may be shifting in your daily life in response to your changes. All of this is cultivating your ability to discern information and respond accordingly.
- Stage 3 – Invalidation to Validation
- People may start to refine their awareness through consistent daily practice during this stage. You may begin to see evidence in your everyday life that you are changing. A level of certainty develops as you gain seniority to energies that once overcame you. With each reading and healing, you may receive validation that you are on your path. If you belong to a development circle, you may be diving deeper into the work, connecting and trading readings with peers, and receiving communication from mentors. The feedback you receive motivates rather than invalidates, creating a greater sense of confidence and trust in the process.
- Stage 4 – Refinement
- This stage is marked by understanding what works for you, your beliefs, and your truth. You may have gone through a period of receiving feedback from peers and through meditation, readings, and healings. You may start to put your abilities into regular daily practice and see the effects within your life. This stage may include your health, relationships, and career. You begin to see what works for you through regular practice and perhaps narrow your focus toward a particular goal. For example, you may find clairvoyant healing a substantial area of focus, or maybe you want to take your reading practice and start offering it to others. You may also have personal goals using your abilities, such as healing or creating something new in your life.
- Stage 5 – Consolidation
- This stage is one of integration and application of what you have learned. This stage may include starting your professional reading, teaching, or healing space or incorporating it into your daily life. You become more comfortable with where you have come and who you are as a psychic, refining your soul’s mission and vision.
A Psychic Perspective
When embarking on a course of study and training in psychic development, these stages may apply and are fascinating to consider with this framework. There is no one way to develop, and the path will look different for each individual. It is also possible to go in and out of these stages over time or see a completely different framework.
Initially, there may be a lot of excitement at the prospect of something new. Regardless of previous experience, joining an organized study program can invigorate the work. As you start to progress, you may want to take in everything at a rapid pace, pouring over any information, joining in circles and reading practices, exchanging readings and healings with others.
There will come a time when you may feel challenged by a particular set of pictures, which throws you into a growth period. It comes in many forms but may include feeling like it isn’t real (atheist pictures) you can no longer see (invalidation), questioning everything to the point that there is no longer a flow in your development (over-analyzing). You also want to quit and move on, usually with a series of complaints and issues that surface. These are just some of the ways people experience a growth period. It may feel like the end, but it is a necessary stage that new information emerges once you pass through it.
During this period, there is a process of coming up against a perceived obstacle and learning how to clear it out and neutralize its emotions and pictures. When one can move through this stage, they take a new step.
Students participating in programs of clairvoyant, psychic, and trance medium development often wonder if the challenges, the growth periods will ever end. The answer is yes and no. Growth periods, the clearing of pictures never end, but what does happen is that you become more aware of identifying it and how to navigate it using clairvoyant tools.
Suppose a person has the calling and courage to embark on a journey into healing and self-awareness through meditation, clairvoyant tools, and participation in development circles. In that case, the rewards are infinite and only limited by your imagination. However, it requires consistency, showing up, and facing what may surface. It is also important to recognize when you may need other resources, such as professional therapy, advice from a qualified medical professional, and other healing modalities, to support your body, mind, and soul fully.
