The Pineal Gland and Psychic Awareness
“My View is the gland (Pineal Gland) is the principal seat of the soul.” – Rene Descartes
The pineal gland, which is in the region of the third eye, is a pea-sized endocrine gland. It has the physical purpose of producing melatonin, which regulates sleep patterns in the circadian and seasonal cycles. It is considered a mystical part of the human body. Cultures throughout history viewed the pineal gland as the portal to the unseen, a bridge between the body and soul. It is the shape of a pinecone, hence the name pineal gland.
Spiritual Connection
The pineal gland is at the level of the sixth chakra and, when stimulated and opened, may lead to higher states of consciousness and increase psychic awareness. Some recorded effects of awakening the pineal gland include a sense of perception beyond time and space. There are many ways to open this area up, including mediation and psychic tools.
History
For thousands of years, the pineal gland was considered a metaphysical tool. Throughout history, leaders have sought higher consciousness through the awakening of the pineal gland. The pineal gland was viewed as the doorway to the higher self. It was depicted in art in many cultures, including the Sumerians, Greeks, Egyptians, and Chinese.
- Ancient Egypt
- The pineal gland is referred to as the Egyptian “third eye” or Eye of Horus. The Eye of Horus was an ancient Egyptian symbol representing protection, royal power, and general health. It was personified as the goddess Wadjet, and is alternatively referred to as the ‘Eye of Ra’. The pineal gland is depicted in the Temple of Luxor at Thebes. It was discovered that the footprint of the temple was designed to outline the knowledge of the endocrine, chakra, and meridian systems. The temple was a representation of heaven on earth in human form. In temples and art, images of pharaohs with cobras rising at the forehead were meant to symbolize the awakened third eye or pineal gland.
- Ancient India
- Eastern spiritual philosophy views this as residing in a chakra point between the eyebrows. In Hindu philosophy, this is called the Ajna Chakra. The term Ajna means to command, summon, or authority. A chakra is a Sanskrit word used by Hindus meaning “wheel of light.” This chakra is associated with spiritual vision, consciousness, and imagination. The pineal gland was extensively focused on Hindu art, music, and the written word and used in healing and mediation practices.
Scientific Exploration
Can science prove the existence and power of the pineal gland? The third eye region may be used as more of an eye than previously thought in considering human evolution. Certain reptile species possess a parietal eye system situated on the forehead region, which allows them to sense light and movement. When the pineal gland is forming in the womb, its cells are the same precursor cells to those that form the eyes. The pineal gland uses what is called non-visual photoreception, which plays a role in balancing circadian rhythms.
In the Book “DMT The Spirit Molecule”, Dr. Rick Strassman outlines his exploration of the effects of DMT (Dimethyltryptamine) in a 5-year clinical study. He researched how the neurotransmitter Dimethyltryptamine affects the human body. Participants were administered DMT in a controlled setting. He noticed that he could see the participant’s altered states of consciousness through the activity of the pineal gland.
Strassman noted that DMT is released during times of high stress such as birth, death, trauma, and altered states of consciousness obtained through meditation and the use of psychoactive substances. He hypothesized that the pineal gland was the gateway to a higher state of consciousness and, in effect, the soul facilitated by the release of DMT.
Participants in his study stated that they experienced a separation of their consciousness from their body and interactions with inter-dimensional beings. Some experiences were heightened and caused a euphoric state; others were frightening. Regardless of the incident, they unanimously said that DMT changed them forever. Dr. Strassman’s clinical work has created a scientific map of how the pineal gland operates and is considered a gateway to other dimensions and states of consciousness.
A Psychic Perspective
Although it is interesting to consider substances that are widespread to access inner states of consciousness, some methods do not require any chemical assistance. Regular meditation practice and clairvoyant tools may help one connect to internal states of being and develop greater psychic awareness. Part of this awareness includes turning your focus on the 6th chakra or the third eye region. Through this lens, it is possible to perceive information in the form of mental image pictures.
