“The human body is sustained by the same prana that nourishes the universe. The body (your equipment) has the ability to control and use this special energy through the use of “pranayama”. Don’t let true word scare you – it just means to control, channel, and direct the flow of prana through the use of breath.”
― John Holland
Mediumship is when a spirit can take over the body in a controlled setting. Mediumship development is learning to raise one’s vibrational tone and blend with spirit for reading or healing. There is a saying that all mediums are psychics, but not all are mediums, which may be true.
There are different levels or layers of communication in mediumship development. Which one depends on the setting and what is required. There is mental mediumship, which begins at the mental level, channeled speaking, automatic writing, and levels of Trance. Deep Trance is when a being can enter the medium’s body. Based on your research and background, there may be other ways to look at this.
What is a Medium?
Many self-proclaimed online and public media mediums claim to speak to the dead. This presentation is the most common perception of mediumship; however, there is also a healing component to mediumship. A medium is someone who accesses information from a higher vibrational tone via the upper chakras and can use this to connect to those in spirit, entities, or for healing.
A psychic medium uses information on a psychic level to read the energy or communicate with the spirit. Often this information and insight use clairvoyance and higher octaves of energy associated with mediumship. Many of the mediums in popular culture today are psychic, reading from a clairvoyant space, as genuine mediumship takes many years of consistent, focused practice with mentors and development groups to reach its full expression.
Levels of Mediumship
Mediumship is sometimes categorized into several stages or levels of conscious awareness and how spirit blends with the medium. Although there are many images and stories of beings taking over bodies in popular culture, horror fiction, and movies, the trance medium is in control and senior to the energies.
Mediumship is a partnership created with the intention of healing and increasing awareness of the individual and those with whom they work. Although someone can be a natural born medium, it usually takes many years of training (anywhere between 5-10 years plus) to form a strong foundation and ability to connect or blend with spirit.
There are varying levels of Trance Mediumship, sometimes categorized as light, medium, and deep. In light Trance, the medium can recall in formation and is primarily conscious. Deep Trance is when a medium essentials step outside their body, and something enters their place. They may not have a recollection of what they said or what happened. Traditionally deep trance mediums will present in a circle witnessed by others, and there will be evidence such as light orbs, noises, and apports. True deep Trance is rare today; however, there is a long history of deep trance mediums.
Light Mediumship and Channeling
There is a difference between light mediumship and trance mediumship. Light mediumship may refer to channeling. It goes deeper or higher than mental mediumship. In channeling, the spirit will blend from a distance of sorts, perhaps the outer layers of the medium’s aura only. They merge less deeply. There are levels to channeling, including light, medium, and deep. Each relates to the level of conscious awareness and how deeply the medium blends or merges with spirit. Another factor is that with channeling, there will be no modulation of the medium’s voice. Many modern mediums work as channels. Channeling also relates to automatic writing.
An evidential medium is a person who provides hard facts, including dates, times, mannerisms, and specific details known only to the person receiving a reading (sitter) as a validation that they are communicating to spirit. The practice originates from the spiritualist movement of the 19th century and has an established church.
Natural Born and Trained Mediums
Training is essential to developing mediumship; however, it is possible to be born with an innate ability and have these gifts open at specific points in an individual’s life. Many practicing mediums do not go the training route; however, it is strongly recommended as working with this high tonal energy can disrupt the body and personal life. Death, illness, accidents, or a traumatic event can trip the switch and open the doors of perception or mediumship to flourish. Having a container with those who have gone before provides support and guidance to what can often be a turbulent ride.
Humans have been attempting to contact spirits, from shamans to witch doctors, who were designated to consult with spirits, to the oracles of ancient Greece. Necromancy is the practice of magic or black magic involving communication with the dead by summoning their spirits as apparitions or visions or by resurrection for divination, imparting the means to foretell future events and discover hidden knowledge and return a person to life.
In the 18th century, Emmanuel Swedenborg refused the orthodox theology of the time. At 50, after a long and successful career of inventing and working in the sciences, he began to have dreams and visions, leading to his spiritual awakening. Swedenborg believed he could speak with demons, spirits, and those in the afterlife. He stated that the spirit was to communicate directly and help individuals, which removed the need to look to the church for answers.
Mediumship began to expand with the Fox Sisters, who, in the mid-18th century, were said to be the individuals who inspired the Spiritualist movement. In 1848, the two young girls claimed to have made contact with the spirit of a murdered peddler in their New York State home. The Fox sisters would regularly hold séances, claiming to connect with spirit from the other side. This movement gained popularity across North America and Europe, and from the mid-1800 to the mid-1900, séances were extremely popular with the general public.
Notable figures like Andrew Jackson Davis, Daniel Dunglas Home, Helena Petrovna Blavatsky, and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle helped give spiritualism a sense of authenticity, and séances were even held in royal palaces, the White House and the homes of highly respectable citizens. Mediums were nearly ubiquitous throughout the United States and portions of Europe.
With the popularity of spiritualism, The Society of Psychical Research, founded in 1882, began scientific-based research into psychic phenomena, including channeling. The bulk of their work centers around telepathy and apparitions.
Trance Medium Healing
Trance Mediumship Healing is when a person raises a high-frequency vibration and may leave their body and bring in a healing being to perform healings for themselves and others. Although spirit may appear, this is predominantly a healing modality.
This form of healing may complement other healing modalities and ideally takes many years of study and practice to develop fully.
Problems in Mediumship
Firstly ask yourself, do I feel called to this work, and what am I looking to experience or gain from in terms of growth? Mediumship development is not one-size-fits-all, and many offerings exist in different formats. Sometimes it takes effort to determine which is right for you. Some programs claim to teach mediumship on the weekend, which is not only not possible but is irresponsible of the teachers, as working with this energy can blow someone open and cause disruptions and other occurrences. Ideally, following a program that lasts several years with a clear structure and focus, avenues to check in and practice create a safer container for the work. They will result in a more favorable outcome.
When seeking a reading or healing by a medium, consider that the mediumship being popularized and presented to the public through film and television is often Psychic Mediumship, which involves more reading energy than raising one to higher frequencies to blend with spirit. Often it is more of a psychic reading. Use your discernment when observing or receiving readings and healings to ensure that the person you work with is working from an impeccable ethical standard and is transparent and honest about what they can or can’t do.
A Psychic Perspective
Mediumship development, as with any energy work, is often a calling. It requires a certain tenacity and grit to endure the ebbs and flows, the roller coaster ride of emotions and growth periods that can be encountered along the way. It is similar to developing psychic awareness, as one becomes more attuned to how energy manifests in the world and your life and how to work with it. It differs because it requires an expansion to a higher octave of energy to connect with the spirit to read or heal.
It can develop in many ways, including alone, with a mentor, or in groups. Ideally, a group setting, either in person or online, with a clear multi-year structure that includes peer and teacher support and opportunities for practice within a controlled and safe container, is optimal for growth. As with any information or study, use your discernment and find your answers to what is ideal for you on your spiritual development journey.
